Last Confederate Veteran In County Claimed by Death-
From Moultrie Observer Weekly, issue 14 Dec 1938
J. H. Bridges Succumbs Shortly before Noon at Son's Home
( Parentheses are from notes- not the paper.)
Colquitt County today was without a Confederate veteran.
J.H. Bridges, 91, last of Colquitt's surviving veteran of the War between the States died about 11 a.m. Wednesday at the home of his son, W. L. Bridges, located on the Tallokas road southwest of Moultrie. ( See W. L. Bridges obit also)
Infirmities of age were given as the cause of death Until two weeks ago, however, Mr. Bridges seemed to enjoy excellent health for a man his age, but his entire body appeared to wilt rapidly after a spell of illness and Tuesday he sank into a coma from which he never emerged.
Funeral services have not been completed pending arrival of several members of the family from south Florida. Relatives said, however, that the final rites will be conducted from Oakdale church, with burial in the nearby cemetery.
Mr. Bridges, a native of Macon county, enlisted in the Confederate army at the age of 17 years and saw service with Company H of the 11th Georgia regiment. He was finally discharged from active service at Doctortown, Ga in April of 1865, He was a youth of 18 years when the war between the Blue and Grey ended.
Less than four years ago four Confederate veterans were still alive in Colquitt County. J.J. Giles, S.J.J. Bruce and J. A. Owens, however, preceded Mr. Bridges in death.
After recovering from the hardships of the Confederate campaign, Mr. Bridges moved to Colquitt county about 45 years ago and took up the occupation of farming. He had been a continuous resident of the county since that time.
Mr. Bridges was born January 21, 1848 in Macon County .(See 1850 census for Upson Co.) and resided there until entering the Confederate army.
Surviving are six daughters, including Mrs. Lucy (John) Ross of Lake Wales, Fl. Mrs. J. W. (Mary Jane) Branch of Tampa Florida, Mrs. J. M. (Virginia) Hay of St. Petersburg, Fla, Mrs. J.O. Powell of McRae, Fla, Mrs. B(en) W.(Beulah) Snellgrove of Omega, Ga (died in Ocilla, Irwin Co, Ga.) and Mrs. R. C. (Richard Cleveland ) ( Donie Rebecca- see her obit/tomb) Norman of Moultrie.
