Death of Mrs. Ashton
Mrs. Jane B. Ashton of Monroe street died at 9 p.m. Saturday. She had been an invalid for many years. The
direct cause of death was indigestion. The deceased was the widow of the late Sergeant Ashton of the
metropolitan police, who died in 1879. Mrs. Ashton was born in Maryland 54 years ago, and has lived in
Washington about 40 years. She moved to this side of the river six years ago, having purchased the residence
of Gen. John E. Smith. She leaves four sons, two unmarried, and one daughter, Mrs. Schatz of Washington.
Mrs. Ashton was a member of the M.E. Church and well known for charitable works. The funeral took place
from the home at 4 pm. today, Rev. Mr. McLaren officiating. Interment was at Congressional.
