Alma Alonzo Heaps, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Feb. 4, 1999 at his home after a long battle with his health.

He was born June 13, 1921 in Escalante, Utah to Thomas Alma and Edith Shurtz Heaps. He married Evelyn Griffin on December 16, 1938 and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. His greatest love was his family and the service he rendered in his church. He held various leadership positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, including an honorable Stake Mission. He and his loving wife served two full time missions. One in the Dallas Texas mission and the other in the Dallas Texas Temple Mission. He was a sealer in the Dallas Texas Temple and the Jordan River Temple, having served there for 13 years.

He was a very renowned and respected horse breeder, trainer, showman and judge. He judged in various parts of the United States and Canada. In 1982 he was inducted into the Utah Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame. He was a Army veteran, having served in World War II. The family would like to give a special thanks to the VA Medical Center. Also Mike, Bertha and Rich.

He is survived by his loving wife Evelyn of 61 years and three children, Douglas L. Heaps of Salt Lake, Gloria (Robert) Campbell of Sandy and Steven G. (Marsha) Heaps of Draper; 11 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson and a sister, June Ashby of Midvale. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services Monday Feb. 8th at 12 noon at the Union 12th Ward, 7800 South Highland Drive. Friends may call Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary 4760 South State St. and Monday from 10:30 to 11:45 at the Church. Interment Larkin Sunset Gardens, 10600 South 1700 East. In lieu of flowers please contribute to your ward missionary fund.
