"Much has been written of Captain Austin Roe , the East Setauket tavern keeper and American spy of the Revolution . But Austin had an equally heroic brother, Captain Daniel who served with the British in the French and Indian War and with the American army during the Revolution. Born at Port Jefferson (then Drowned Meadow) in 1740, he married Deborah Brewster and settled at
Selden (then called Westflelds) and became a successful farmer. Their farmhouse , still standing, was on the south side of the Middle
Country road and many years later, until a few years ago, was owned and occupied by the late Samuel Dare and family, Daniel survived the Revolution and also the war of 1812 in which he was too old to fight, dying in 1820 at the age of 80. His widow Deborah died twelve years later at the age of 91."
