My great-grandfather Marvin Denton Cormany, Sr. was born on June 6, 1904, the third of five children born to Alanson W. and Alberta May "Bertie" Cormany in Marion, Virginia. He had three sisters and one brother. The children got their first taste of tragedy early on December 19, 1909; their father died suddenly of diabetic shock, and their widowed mother had to enlist the help of the older children with the farm work. Marvin was able to stay in school until the seventh grade before he was needed.

Marvin grew up to be a dashing Southern gentleman, having inherited his father's steel-blue eyes and muscular 6'1" frame, and his mother's thick raven-black hair, and tan complexion. Before long, he built his own house and met the love of his life, Nellie Mae Bedwell, a tall redhead who would soon say yes to his marriage proposal in 1929. Once they were established in their new home, Marvin's mother moved into the granny flat he had built behind it, where she would live until her death in 1966. Marvin and Nellie's first baby, Swanna Dell, was stillborn, but their other three children, Phyllis, Peggy, and Marvin, Jr. survived to adulthood. Marvin and his wife proved to be capable parents of these three children, and they happily raised them into kind, hardworking adults.

When he and Nellie's children started families of their own, they couldn't have been better grandparents. Marvin taught the grandsons how to chop wood and take care of the farm animals, and Nellie taught both the boys and girls the ways of the kitchen and well-kept house. They were blessed with a blissful forty-seven year marriage that lasted until Nellie died suddenly of a heart attack in 1976, and shortly thereafter,Marvin was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. On May 14, 1977, he married again, this time to Mary Waddell, who took great care of Marvin throughout his lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. Marvin eventually went to be with the Lord on January 16, 1989, with his family at his side, aged eighty-four.
