Robert Hurley mustered into service 9/15/1861 as a private at Camp Butler, IL but had achieved the rank of corporal before being killed.

SERVICE of 48th Illinios - Grant's Expedition into Kentucky January 16-21, 1862. Operations against Fort Henry, Tenn., February 2-6. Capture of Fort Henry February 6. Investment and capture of Fort Donelson, Tenn., February 12-16. Duty at Fort Donelson till March 4. Moved to Savannah, Tenn., March 4.11, thence to Pittsburg Landing, Tenn., March 25. Battle of Shiloh, Tenn., April 6-7. The 48th first in line of battle on April 6, 1862. Illinois 48th infantry 2nd Brigade-Marsh 1st Division-McClernand's Army of the Tennessee. Commanded by 1. Col. I. N. Haynie, wounded 2. Lieut. Col. W. W. Sanford, wounded 3. Major M. Mayfield Went into line of battle here about 9:00 AM April 6, 1862 and held it until 10:50 AM, when it was driven back 500 yards. The Regiment lost in the battle 1 officer and 17 men killed; 4 officers and 108 men wounded, 1 officer and 2 men missing; total 133.

Adjutant General's report "The Regiment moved, with General McClernand's Division, to Savannah and to Pittsburg Landing. April 6 and 7, was engaged in the battle of Shiloh, the Regiment bearing its full part, and losing over half of its men, killed and wounded. Colonel Haynie and Lieutenant Colonel Sanford were both wounded on the 6th."

**He more than likely rests in the Shiloh National Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
