This is my 4th Great Uncle. In our family tree the last name is spelled many different ways, i.e., Mayze, Mayes, Mays and Mayse. Every record I have seen for Johnathan spells his last name Mayes. In light of this, and even though his headstone reads "Mayse", I am recording his last name here at Find A Grave as "Mayes". If there are direct descendants out there who know differently, I certainly welcome their input.
