Ella Pearson Overstreet
NEWPORT NEWS - Mrs. Ella Perrow Pearson Overstreet, age 87, a resident of the Virginia Peninsula since 1943, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at The Newport, Newport News, Va.
Ella was born May 28, 1921, in Briery, Prince Edward Co., Va. She was the eldest of the three daughters of Joseph Lazarus Pearson and Virginia Perrow Pearson. She graduated from Prince Edward's Worsham High School and Phillips Secretarial School at Lynchburg, Va. Ella married Melvin Ray Overstreet, a native of Bedford Co., Va., who died May 20, 1984. She was a secretary for Newport News Public Schools, retiring in 1981. Ella was an active member of Temple Baptist Church for over 50 years. She was highly regarded for her generosity toward her family and friends, her love for her church, her sweet disposition and her healthy lifestyle, which included daily long walks.
Ella is survived by her daughter, Janet Watkins and husband, Nelson Watkins Jr., of Newport News; her son, Kenneth Overstreet of Duluth, Ga.; her three grandsons, Bryan Godfrey, Jason Godfrey and wife, Jessica, and Errin Overstreet; three step-grandsons, Bradley Watkins and wife, Susan, Andrew Watkins, Todd Watkins and wife, Tabitha, and their children; [her deceased daughter-in-law Sheila O'Shea Overstreet's daughter, Erica Reade-Hill Cooper, and husband Jeffrey and their daughter, Veronica Grace Cooper]; her sister, Virginia Wheeler of Lynchburg; siblings-in-law, Mabel Hawkins, Rudolph Overstreet and Isabelle White Overstreet, all of Bedford.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News. Visitation may also be at the home of her daughter at 20 Terrell Road, Newport News, other times. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Peninsula Funeral Home with the Rev. Lynn Hardaway officiating, and burial in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News.
The family is grateful to the staffs of Eden Pines Assisted Living in Hampton and The Newport for their excellent care of Ella.
Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
