Fifth of 9 children of John Curtis and Eliza Dare Hollaway, Neal married Madge Parker in 1933. They had one son.

Neal and Madge lived in St. Louis, MO. Neal was a great fan of the St. Louis Browns baseball team and 'hated' the St. Louis Cardinals.

They retired to a home in Florida where both died.
