WIFE, 22, MURDERED BY HUSBAND, 42, WHO TAKES HIS OWN LIFE

Shooting occurs in Conant Avenue Home after Reunion

JEALOUSLY IS BLAMED IN CORONER'S REPORT

Last Previous Murder Occurred in Monroe Five Years Ago

The first murder in the city in five years occurred shortly after 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, when Sam Mabe, 42, shot and killed his 22 year-old wife, Carrie Carpenter Mabe, and then committed suicide. The double killing occurred in the Mabe home in the rear of 326 Conant Avenue, Jealously was given as the motive of the murder by Coroner Edward Rupp and Detective Paul Dentel.

The police was notified of the shooting by a woman living in a two-family apartment near the Mabe home. She heard shots and called Police headquarters. Detective Dentel and Lieutenant Winters rushed to the house in a police car. Mabe shouted "Come and get me." and then placed the revolver in his left side and fired.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Mabe were dead when admitted to Monroe Hospital. The officers found the body of Ms. Mabe on the floor in the adjoining room with bullet holes in her neck and head. She died instantly.

According to the Coroner Rupp and Officer Dentel the couple had separated ten days ago when Mrs. Mabe went to her former home near Tazewell, Tennessee. Mabe followed her there a few days ago. In the meantime, Mrs. Mabe returned here and went to live with relatives. Mabe, Coroner Rupp said, returned Saturday morning and went to see his wife. She went home Saturday afternoon with Mabe to get her clothing and no sooner then they were inside, Mabe fired the gun at her, officers said.

Neighbors reported to the officers that when the couple was returning to the house both were laughing and talking.

Coroner Rupp gave a verdict of murder-suicide.

Mabe and his wife moved to Monroe five years ago from Tazewell where they were married April 11, 1935. Mabe had been previously married.

The shooting was done with a .38-caliber revolver believed, by the officers, to have been brought here by Mabe when he returned from Tennessee Saturday morning. He had been employed at the Stoner-Maurer Company on East First Street.

The body of Mrs. Mabe was removed to the Rupp Funeral Home and last night was shipped to Bulls Gap, Tennessee, her former home. She was born in Claiborne County, Tennessee, April 1, 1919. Mrs. Mabe leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gar Carpenter of Bulls Gap; three brothers, Charles, in a CCC camp in Tennessee, Dallas of Bulls Gap, and Archie in the United States Army in Florida; and four sisters, Mrs. Horace Sherill and Jean and Hazel Carpenter of Bull's Gap and Mrs. Ward Redding of near Tampa, Florida.

The body of Mr. Mabe has been moved to the Earle Little Funeral Home. He leaves his mother, Mrs. John Mabe of Kentucky; a brother George Mabe of Strawberry Plains, Tennessee; and a sister Mrs. Mandy Gibson of Kentucky.
