FRANCES TURNER MILES
---Frances Coleman Turner Miles, daughter of Elijah T. Turner and Martha Yates Turner, was born in Randolph County, Missouri on July 5, 1850 and died September 2, 1946.
---When a small child she came with her parents to the New Harmony vicinity east of La Plata, becoming one of the early settlers of Macon County where she spent the remainder of her life.
---She was married on January 19, 1873 to John William Miles who preceded her in death on March 29, 1921. To this union were born three daughters, Sam Alice, who died in infancy, Mrs. Dea Miles Christie of La Plata with whom she made her home, and Mrs. Willie Mills who died May 1, 1905.
---As one of the pioneer citizens, she endured the hardships of the then new country, always faithful to the cares of the Master, often sacrificing health and strength to minister to the sick and needy. She was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church and Sunday School and a charter member of the Missionary Society.
---In the early '70's, with her husband, she moved to La Plata and became an influential citizen, always assisting with the many enterprises for improvement of the community and in the growth of the small village into a prosperous town.
---Besides her daughter, she is survived by two granddaughters, Mrs. Fae Christie England and Mrs. Irene Christie Monaghan of Minneapolis, Minnesota and four great-grandchildren, Donald and Thomas England, and Helen Dea and Fae Monaghan, one brother, R.R. Turner of La Plata and a host of other relatives and friends.
---Funeral services were conducted from the D.S. Christie Funeral Home by her pastor, Fred L. Hudson, Wednesday morning, September 4. She was laid to rest beside her husband in the La Plata cemetery.
