Williamsburg has lost an esteemed resident in the person of Walter Hugart Cheatham, who was stricken suddenly on Saturday afternoon while attending the football game at the college stadium, passing away shortly after at the Bell Hospital.

Mr. Cheatham was president of his class at William and Mary where he graduated in 1920. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon social fraternity and a Mason. At the time of his death, he was Virginia representative of the American Seating company with offices in Richmond. He was formerly principal of the Williamsburg & Blackstone High Schools as well as assistant principal of the Binford Junior High Schoool of Richmond.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon conducted by The Rev. Thomas J Hawkins of The First Methodist Church, Norfolk, and The Rev. L F Havermale, pastor of the Williamsburg Methodist Church. Pallbearers were R M Newton, W R Kessler, K J Hoke, J L Hollister, W G Guy, James Ver Muellen and R W Coupland.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Dorothy Childress Cheatham of Williamsburg, formerly of Franklin County; a son, Walter H Cheatham, Jr, of Williamsburg; a step-daughter, Mrs. Nancy Davis Upshur of Norfolk; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hillary Goode Cheatham of Roanoke; two sisters, Miss Pauline Cheatham of Charlottesville and Mrs. Howard H Hannahas of Christiansburg; two brothers, Clifton Rawlings Cheatham of Christianburg, and Bentley Angle Cheatham of Roanoke.
