Robert M. DeLaney, M.D., 86, of Gatesville, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 7, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, with Father Hilario Guajardo and Father Anthony officiating. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at the church. Private interment will be at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio at a later date.

Robert was born in Morristown, New Jersey, to the late Oscar and Eleanore Schulz DeLaney. In September 1935, he moved to Abernathy, Texas, to live with his grandparents, Herman and Martha Schulz. He graduated from Abernathy High School in 1940. At the age of 16, he entered University of Texas at Austin to begin pre-medical studies after high school. He withdrew from University of Texas in 1943 and enlisted with the U.S. Army. After finishing basic training, he was assigned to 108th Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry Division. His Infantry Regiment participated in combat operations in the Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with five Battle Stars, and Combat Medical Badge. He was honorably discharged in November 1945. Robert resumed his education and was awarded Doctor of Medicine Degree from Medical College of Georgia in June 1950. He married Mary Carson Gladden in 1970. After completing post-graduate training, he had a general practice in Lubbock and Marble Falls. He was the Medical Director of Scott and White Clinic in Moody. He had a general practice in Gatesville from 1989 to 2007. Robert enjoyed playing golf, researching Civil War history and was an avid reader. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his 15 year old daughter, Patricia DeLaney in 1973.

Robert leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Mary; six children; four grandchildren; and his devoted little golf pal, Bentley.
