Helen Zobell Shurtz, 88, died Feb. 24, 2011, in Kanab, at her daughter's home.

She was born Sept. 23, 1923, in Rigby, Idaho, on her Grandmother Scholes' farm, daughter of Ira Delos and Amy Scholes Zobell.

She was the oldest of eight children. She spent her youth in Idaho, Price, Logan and Montana.

She met her husband, Chase Shurtz, in Montana while he was serving a mission. They were married Feb. 14, 1942, in the Salt Lake LDS temple. She moved to Escalante after her marriage, and except for brief times, spent the rest of her life there.

Helen was an active member of the LDS church and served in auxiliary leadership positions on both the ward and stake level. She loved farm animals, was an avid reader and was an expert at knitting and crochet.

Survivors include children David Ray (Bonnie) Shurtz, Auburn Hills, Mich.; Annette (Ron) McCool Hlavac, Costa Mesa, Calif.; Susan Shurtz, Escalante; Marian Mills, Gladstone, Ore.; and Sara (Vince) Vincent, Kanab; siblings Rex Zobell, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Alma Ruth Boyce, St. George; Keith Zobell, Salem; Amy (Ferris) Clegg, Richfield; and Janet (Robert) Swanson, California; 23 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Chase Shurtz, brothers Grant and Karl Zobell, daughter-in-law Yolanda Shurtz, and grandson Edward Ray Shurtz.

Funeral services took place Feb. 26, in the Escalante LDS ward.

Interment was in the Escalante Cemetery.
