James's father, George, ran a tannery in Mooresburg, TN. His mother, Nannie Kinkead, lived in Rogersville, TN, and was engaged to be married when TN seceded from the USA. Her fiance joined the Union Army, and she immediately gave his ring back- wanting nothing to do with a Yankee. She later received word that her former fiance had died of malaria while serving as a medic in GA. After the war, she attended a Christmas dance with a friend in Dec, 1865. She and her friend, George Etter, were soon married.
