Born James Torrible, the son of James and Henrietta (Burrows) Torrible. His father was a British revenue officer or coastguardsman who was relocated to various posts, eventually settling in Wyke Regis, near Weymouth. James came to New Orleans about 1840. He married Sarah Ann Duff. By 1848 he had begun using his mother's family name, Burrows. Four children are known: Isabella, Henrietta, James W. and Sarah H. Of these, only Isabella and Sarah are known to have had children.
