Daniel O'connell Riley was born on 31 March 1909 at the Riley Ranch near Runge, Texas. He was the second born child of William Joseph and Maggie Mae Riley. He was born, raised, and lived his entire life at the Riley Ranch, probably in the household of his parents. A large part of his story has been told in the story of his parents; he had an older brother, John Oliver Riley, a younger brother, William Maurice Riley, and 2 younger sisters, Margaret Helen Riley (Warzecha)and Marjorie Mae Riley (Stefka).

Daniel O'connell Riley died on 8 October 1934 of pnuemonia at the young age of only 25; he got pnuemonia after his father also was stricken with the disease and died as a result. He is buried in the Runge Catholic Cemetery with several other members of his family.
