Mr. F. M. Hoover, Sr., Valiant Veteran of the Civil War Passes--Had Family in Mecklenburg 50 Years--Native of Lincoln.
Mr. F. M. Hoover, Sr., a valiant veteran of the civil war and a landmark in Mecklenburg county, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. H. Shields, No. 911 West Trade street, yesterday morning at the age of 84 years. In his passing Mecklenburg loses a pioneer for he has probably farmed about 50 years in this county, and watched its growth from a thinly populated backwoods settlement to the most populous and up-to-date county in the State. He was born in Lincoln county and moved to the Paw Creek neighborhood about 1845 or 1850 where he became engaged in farming. When the war came on he went into service and proved a fearless and undaunted soldier. He was a lifelong member of Mulberry Presbyterian church in the county. About seven years ago his wife died and then he gave up farming and moved into the city to be near his children. At the time of his death he was making his home with Mrs. Shields and besides her there are surviving him the following sons: Messrs. G. L. Hoover of Derita, F. M. Hoover, Jr., of Charlotte, and W. H. Hoover of Richmond, Va. Mr. Hoover was believed to be a victim of pellagra. He had been ill several weeks with a peculiar disease and the physicians diagnosed his case as pellagra. It was not known that he was dangerously ill and his death came as a sudden shock to his children and friends.
The funeral service will be conducted from the residence of Mrs. Shields this morning at 9 o'clock and the remains will be carried to Mulberry church for interment. Rev. H. M. Pressly will officiate.
