At the time of "the storm" (hurricane) of 1900, which completely destroyed
Galveston, Texas, St. Mary's Orphanage was home to 93 children and 10 Catholic
nuns. It stood between the Gulf of Mexico and Green's Bayou, just off the beach
and, was "one of the first buildings to succumb to the storm". When the storm hit,
waters from the Gulf and bayou met and swallowed the orphanage. This brave
‘Bride of Christ', along with her nine colleagues, perished in their attempts to save their young wards. Only three of the children survived. Galveston Island residents
buried the deceased at sea or placed them upon great funeral pyres. God bless
them all.
