American preacher, theologian, author as well as professor at Harvard University's Divinity School. He was the only child of Peter Lobo & Orissa White Gomes. Gomes graduated from Bates College and Harvard Divinity School before being ordained an American Baptist minister in 1968. He was a leading expert on early American religion, serving as Harvard's official interreligious chaplain through Memorial Church of Harvard University since 1970. In 2008, Gomes was featured in Henry Louis Gates' PBS documentary African American Lives 2. In 2011, Gomes was featured in the PBS documentary Out In America.
