Son of Lt. Col. John Marshall Carah and Connie Jane Harris. Jon graduated from Burkburnett High School (Texas) in 1966 and then attended San Jose State College in California, graduating in 1970. After graduation he began working on the Alaska pipe line, first as a land transport driver and later as a supply boat captain.

He spent a number of years as a licensed ship master engaged in supplying equipment and supplies to oil and gas well operations around the world.

He later retired to an old family owned property in Paradise, California where he was a landlord and engaged in logging and construction.

He enjoyed his 65' trawler, the "Carry-On," and he cruised along most of the Western United States and Canada. He enjoyed diving, a skill he learned while living in the Western Pacific as a teenager.

He was a big fan of restoring vintage Mercedes autos and he accumulated a large collection of parts for these cars. He was often seen in his vintage SL going down the highway with his faithful dog "Ears" at his side.

Jon made hundreds of friends during his lifetime and was welcome everywhere he went. While staying aboard his boat in Winchester Bay, Oregon he suffered a fatal heart attack. He is buried in Paradise Cemetery next to his father and mother.
