John C. 'Hi' Holden, retired postal worker
CUBA -- John C. "Hi" Holden of 94 Decker Parkway East, Elmira, formerly of Cuba, died Thursday (March 26, 1998) in the Chemung County Nursing Facility in Elmira.
Born Nov. 16, 1911, in Cuba, he was a son of Harry and Christina Sloan Holden. On Dec. 21, 1941, he married the former Nellie Palmer, who survives.
Mr. Holden had lived most of his life in Cuba and recently moved to Elmira. He was employed as a postal clerk in the Cuba post office prior to his retirement.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving from Feb. 5, 1942, to Nov. 5, 1945, attaining the rank of master sergeant.
Mr. Holden was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cuba and a 50-year member of the Cuba American Legion Post 655.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 56 years are a son, James (Patricia) Holden of Elmira; two daughters, Ann (Lee) Edington of Phelps and Jane (Patrick) Kidd of New Port Richey, Fla., four grandchildren; and two cousins. He was predeceased by his parents.
Friends will be received at the McIntosh Funeral Home (Nicholson Chapel), 24 Genesee Parkway, Cuba, on Sunday (March 29, 1990) from noon until 2 p.m., at which time funeral services will be held. The Rev. Jon Rieley-Goddard, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Cuba Cemetery, Cuba.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
