Mrs. Mary Steinman
Mrs. Mary Steinman, whose maiden name was Mary Bowman, and whose death was announced last week, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Bowman. She was born in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania,
September 13, 1847, and died May, 22, 1928, at the age of eighty years, eight months and nine days. At the age of seven years she moved to Illinois with her parents. At the age of twenty years she was married to Jacob Steinman at Lanark, Illinois. Five children were born to this union, all of whom are living except one son, Henry, who proceeded her in death April 21, 1922. The others are John, Louisa, Mrs. Gertie Harrison and Minnie Steinman, all living in Algona.

At the age of thirty years she was left a widow, the husband being accidently killed by a train, he being a drayman in, the town of Shannon, Illinois. His dying words to his faithful wife were, "Stay by the children and keep them together." She, having carried out his wish, was still living with her son, John and daughter, Minnie, who have done all that loving hands could do for her through all the years of sickness. She was in failing health since the age of forty-five years until she went into a slumber, from which she did not, rally. She has been a resident of Kossuth county for forty years and came to Algona with her five children February 17, 1888, in hope of doing better for them by going on a farm, which proved to be a success. She was a hard working woman, and a kind and loving mother, always trying to do all she could for the interests of her children. She was held in highest esteem by all who knew her. She was a member of the Evangelical church of Shannon, Illinois. Later she attended the Methodist church when health permitted. Her greatest aim in life was trying to bring her children up to be honest and upright. She was also a great lover of flowers. She leaves to mourn her untimely death her four children, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Phoebe Moore of Algona, and three brothers, William Bowman of Des Moines, George of Sterling, Illinois, and Adam Bowman of Columbus, Missouri, who were unable to attend the funeral because of sickness. Three brothers and one sister proceeded her in death.
