Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at her late home for Mrs. S. C. (Emma) Spear who died Friday. The Rev. D. R. Martin, pastor of the Congregational church officiated, and burial was made in Riverview.

Mrs. Spear who was born at Portland, Me., April 26, 1849, lacked only five days of her 90th birthday. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Strout, and she was educated in the east, studying music and painting. On April 28, 1870, she was married to Simon C. Spear, and they came here the same year. She had lived here 69 years.

Mr. Spear opened a clothing store on State street, south of the courthouse. Except for two years at Sioux City, the Spears made Algona their home throughout their married life. Mr. Spear was a Civil war veteran, having served with a Massachusetts regiment, and Mrs. Spear was a member of the W. R. C. They traveled extensively, attended every G. A. R. encampment till Mr. Spear's death December 11, 1927, and spent the last ten winters of his life in Florida.

Mrs. Spear had been in failing health five years, and she was seriously sick six weeks. Three weeks ago she suffered two strokes. Her granddaughter, Mrs. Mark C. Cord, Danbury, came two weeks ago to help care for her.

Survivors are a sister, Mrs. Adeline Dalton, Portland, Me.; the only daughter, Mrs. Geo. C. Call, Sioux City; and two grandchildren, George R. Call, Sioux City, and Mrs. Cord. The George Calls have two children John and Barbara. |

Besides the immediate relatives, Anna Nelson came for the funeral. Miss Nelson, who has been with the Spears and Calls 35 years, now lives with Mrs. Geo. C. Call.
Pall-bearers at the funeral were M. P. Weaver. M. P. Haggard, E. J. VanNess, D. C. Hutchison, W. P. French, and Lawrence Misbach.
