PENDLETON - A memorial service for Barbara Guye Hodgen will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 241 S.E. Second St., in Pendleton. Inurnment will be at Olney Cemetery.

Mrs. Hodgen, 88, of Pendleton, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at Willowbrook Terrace in Pendleton.

She, and her twin sister, Beverly, were born July 26, 1914, at Umatilla to Elmer and Lola Guye. When the twins were 11 months old, the family moved to La Grande. They also lived at Pocatello, Idaho, for a time and moved to Pendleton where the girls graduated from high school with the class of 1932.

Mrs. Hodgen enrolled at Eastern Oregon Normal School in La Grande later that year, graduating in 1934. She taught at Stanfield her first year, then taught at Pendleton until her retirement in 1976. While teaching she obtained a bachelor's degree from the University of Utah and worked toward her master's degree at the University of Washington and at the University of California at Berkeley.

In May 1941, she married F.L. "Bill" Hodgen of Pendleton. The couple later divorced.

Mrs. Hodgen served as an Oregon delegate to the National Education Association meeting in San Francisco in her earlier years. She had been president of the Pendleton branch of the American Association of University Women, had been a member of Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile, belonged to the Pendleton Country Club, Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Umatilla County Republican Women, Umatilla-Morrow County Retired Teachers' Association and was a Smithsonian Associate member.

She enjoyed playing golf, reading, playing bridge and following all sports from Little League to college games. She and her twin sister often were seen at many outdoor athletic events wearing their matching hats.

For many years she was a student of local artist Antoinette Kennedy.

After her retirement she traveled extensively in Europe, Africa, China, Russia and the United States.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Lola Guye; her twin sister, Beverly Guye Rothrock; and nephew, Kent Rothrock. She is survived by a niece, Karen Rothrock McAnally of Pendleton; by great nieces and great nephews; and other relatives.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Umatilla County Historical Society, Boys and Girls Aid Society of Oregon, or Pendleton Arts Center, directly or through Bishop Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 325, Pendleton, OR 97801.
