Nativity was born in Prussia/ removed to Union Penn /removed to Butler Center Iowa 1856
Enlisted Apr 1 1862 into CO F 2nd Iowa Cavalry.
Taken Prisoner Boonville, Mississippi.
Paroled (probably via prisoner exchange)
Promoted Corporal Jan 12, 1864.
Reenlisted Mar 1 1864.
Killed in action West Harpeth 6 miles south of Franklin, TN his unit was on the far right next to the railroad tracks of Nashville and Decator RR. His Calvary Unit hit Ross Texas Calvary head-on. A fight broke out over the Texas color guards AKA the flag of the Texas Calvary. Which Herman was shot in the head and killed Dec 17 1864. three other union soldiers died in that fight over the flag.

Herman Margretz is buried at Stones River National Cemetery as unknown in Franklin section I.

He Was Buried where he fell initially. Then before 23 FEb 1865 moved to a mass grave in Franklin TN. Waiting for a final resting spot. After the opening of Stones River Cemt summer of 1865 and after union soldiers from Stones River battles were moved into the sections in Stones River. The Union soldiers from up to 80 miles around, were exhumed and moved to Stones River .
Mass graves in Franklin Tn; Union side were moved to Section I in the old Franklin Section of Stones River. He lies in an unmarked grave.
