William Mitchell Abernethy, 85, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2004 in Jacksonville, Florida. Born in Pablo Beach (Jacksonville Beach, Florida), he lived most of his life in Jacksonville. He served his country during World War II as a Chief Boatswains Mate. Later, he joined the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve, and retired with the rank of Commander in 1979. During his time with the Reserve he served as Commanding Officer of several Jacksonville area units. He also had a civil service career and retired from the NAS Jacksonville supply department. He loved boating, was a member of the Navy JAX Yacht Club, and had a lifelong love affair with the St. John's River. He was a gardener and an avid orchid grower.

Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Walczyk; son, George Mitchell Abernethy; son-in-law Michael Walczyk; 7 nephews and 1 niece. Visitation on Monday, April 5, 2004 from 6 until 8 PM at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home, Orange Park, Florida. Graveside funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 6, 2004, 11:00 a.m. at H. Warren Smith Cemetery, Jacksonville Beach.
