United States Navy 4 Star Admiral. Born into a Navy family in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who was killed on the deck of the battleship "USS Arizona" during the Japanese Imperial Navy attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in December 1941. Isaac C. Kidd Jr. graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland in 1942, only months after his father had been killed. He was assigned to convoy duty in the North Atlantic Ocean, and later served as a gunnery officer aboard a destroyer during the Allied landings in Italy. He finished the war in the Pacific theater, and saw action at Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He received his first destroyer command shortly after the end of the war. In August 1962, he was appointed senior aide to the chief of naval operations. He was chief of materiel at the Pentagon from 1971 to 1975. That year, he took his post as commander of the United States Navy's Atlantic Fleet, holding it until retiring in 1978. His decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star. He died of prostate cancer at his home in Alexandria, Virginia, at the age of 79.
