He was one of 10 children and served during the civil war. His family moved to western Pennsylvania in 1841, eventually settling in Crawford County. Later he moved to Minnesota. When war broke out he enlisted after President Lincoln's call for troops to put down the rebellion. On 29 April 1861 he became a member of Company I, First Minnesota Infantry. H was wounded in action at the first battle of Bull Run. He was captured, taken prisoner and sent to Richmond, then Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and eventually to Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis where he was paroled. He returned to his regiment on 22 Dec 1862, more than a year after his capture. He was killed during the charge of the First Minnesota in Gettysburg.
