Chico Daily Record, Thursday morning, February 19, 1903, pg 4 col 1: Roy Benner Continues Critically Ill. Roy Benner, a young man well known in Chico who has been in poor health for a couple of years, is lying in an unconscious state at the home of his mother on Orient street, his ailment being apoplexy. Mr. Benner suffered the stroke Tuesday evening, while in Hasting’s drug store, and since has not recovered consciousness.

Dr. Harvey, who is attending him, can give but little hope for his recovery, though every effort is being put forth to save his life.

Chico Daily Record, Friday morning, February 20, 1903, pg 1 col 1: Death of Roy Benner Yesterday. Without regaining consciousness after suffering a stroke of apoplexy last Tuesday evening, Roy Benner, a young man less than thirty years of age, passed away yesterday morning about 10 o’clock at the home of his mother, Mrs. J.B. Phillips, on Orient street. For two years previous to the fatal attack, Mr. Benner had been in ill health.

Deceased was a native of Plumas county, aged 27 years, 10 months and 18 days. He was the son of William Benner, who resided at Prattville for a number of years. Roy had made his home in both Butte and Plumas counties throughout his life. For sometime he was clerk at the Johnson House in Chico, also at the Union Hotel. He was an energetic young man, possessed of a wide acquaintanceship and a similarly large circle of friends.

He leaves a step-father, J.B. Phillips, the mother and the following brothers and sisters: Henry and Albert Benner of Prattville, Mrs. C.E. McLaughlin of Quincy, and Misses Grace and Vivian Benner of Chico.

The funeral will take place from the Presbyterian Church in Chico Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. White officiating.
