Pennington, a native of KY moved to this (McDonough) county in 1829; he lived for a time in Schuyler Co., IL, and near Pennington Point in New Salem Twp., McDonough Co. He was first married to Polly H. Vanters, a native of KY.; they had several children including James W. (b: 1836). Polly died in 1840; she and several of her children are buried in the Standard Cemetery, in Industry Twp., McDonough Co., IL. Thomas and Mrs. Mary J. (Smithers) Rogers) were married in April, 1841; 2 of their children (Ulissus & infant) are buried at Standard Cemetery. The 1830 federal census indicates that Thos. J. and family were living in Schuyler Co., IL. and that he and his wife had 2 daughters under age 5 years. In 1840, Mr. Pennington was residing in McDonough Co.; he appears on the 1840 county tax list as #453; he owned $230.00 worth of horses, $100.00 cattle, $20.00 clocks & watches; $40.00 wagons, $337.00 in other property; no real estate; his total taxes were $3.64. Other children of Thomas J. and his second wife, Mary, included: Thos. (1842); S. M. C. (1844); Nancy (1847; Jemima (1849); Stephen (1852); Elvira (1858); and Morris Isaac (1860).
