Private Bonewitz was age 19 when he entered service. He was captured 3 May 1864 near Snaggy Point on the Red River, Louisiana; mustered out 8 July 1865 at Camp Chase, Ohio.

John married Cordelia J Hubler, 30 Sep 1869 in Allen County Indiana. Cordella died in January 1881 and was buried at Antioch Lutheran Cem, Allen Co, Indiana

John Jefferson Bonewitz then married Elizabeth Alice McGimpsey, Dec 28, 1882. Elizabeth Alice McGimpsey was born in Indiana. Her parents died when she was young. She moved to Topeka when she was 18 and married John there. John worked for the Santa Fe Railroad until 1890, then operated a grocery store in North Topeka until he died.

Together they had 1 son Arthur Louis Bonewitz
Buried at Topeka, he married Inez May Kincaid, They lived in Topeka. Arthur worked for the Santa Fe until 1920.
