Elizabeth is the daughter of James Calvey, born in Ireland and Elizabeth Meek born in England. After immigrating to the U.S. records show they moved to Iowa, but later move to Alton, Illinois. Her father James worked as a quarryman.

In 1881 Elizabeth married Louis T McLain
who died in abt 1893 they had 3 children:
Edward James McLain
1882 – 1953
Louis Joseph McLain
1884 – 1949
Mary Ellen "Stella" McLain
1888 –

In 1895 Elizabeth married again to George McGarrahan 1854 –1917 together they had 2 additional children.
George Bryan McGarrahan
1896 – 1970
Katherine G McGarrahan
1900 –

Later Elizabeth went to live with her daughter Mary Ellen "Stella" Waldron in St. Louis and apparently went back to using McLain as her last name. Elizabeth McLain, was the name she used in the 1930 Census and is the name used on her death certificate.

Elizabeth died at home in St. Louis and was brought home to Alton, and was buried at Calvery Cemetery, near Edwardsville, Illinois.

Elizabeth's Headstone has McGarrahan on it this was because Elizabeth and George McGarrahan's children George and Kathryn paid for it and understandably they wanted their last name on their Mother Elizabeth's headstone.
