Mary Jeanette is believed to be the daughter of John and Mary Hinchcliff who came from Dewsbury, Yorkshire England in 1827, settled in PA, then moved to Williamson Co., IL about 1828 (J. C. Hinchcliff: From Whence We Came). Mary Jeanette was born in Williamson Co. in 1834. She married Alexander Kelly August 9, 1849, in Williamson Co., IL. All of Alexander and Mary Jeanette's children were born in Williamson Co., most likely in Twp. 9 (Carterville Twp).
It is estimated from Williamson Co., IL tax records and court records, and Texas Co., MO census records that the family moved to Texas Co., MO, Upton Twp., the early part of 1870. After reading the book, Williamson County, Illinois by Milo Erwin, written in 1876, one tends to believe the Kelly's reason for moving was to protect themselves from harm. Mr. Milo tells of several disturbances and killings in the area they were living during 1850-1870s.
Alexander purchased land from James H. Trim in Twp. 31 (Upton Twp), Sec. 36, Range 12, Texas Co., MO. He also homesteaded adjacent property in Twp. 30 (Morris Twp), Sec. 1. The homestead was located just north and slightly west of Huggins, MO.
After Alexander died July 19, 1885, Mary Jeanette moved with her daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Alice and John L. Ritchey, to Norfolk, Madison Co., NE by June 1887.
In January 1887, while still in Texas Co., MO, Mary Jeanette applied for a pension due to Alexander's service in the Mexican War. She could not write, so her papers are signed with an "X". She was awarded $8.00 a month.
In the 1900 census Mary Jeanette Kelly was found living with daughter and son-in-law Sarah Alice and John L. Ritchey in Madison Co., NE. Her sons, Allen and Alexander R. were living with their families in Antelope Co., NE. in 1900. On July 4, 1900, she married Allen Marshall. He died Dec. 31, 1905. Mary J. (Kelly) Marshall was living with son and daughter-in-law Alexander Robert and Martha J. Kelly in 1910 at Antelope Co., NE. Her son John J. Kelly and family also lived in Antelope Co., NE in 1910.
Mary Jeanette Kelly Marshall died Jan 22, 1913 in Oakdale, NE and was buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Antelope Co., NE. Her death certificate lists William Hinchcliff as her father, but this is believed to be incorrect since there was a Quit Claim Deed filed by John Hinchcliff's second wife, Nancy Brannon Hinchcliff, naming the heirs of John Hinchcliff as William Hinchcliff, Martha (Hinchcliff) Fozzard, John Hinchcliff (Jr.), Sarah (Hinchcliff) Tippy and Polly (Hinchcliff) Kelly. Also, William was not married and was only 16 when Mary Jeanette was born.
