Both of his parents were from New York. Abner was living with Richard and Nancy McFarlain in 1850.
Abner joined up with the Union forces for the Civil War, in 1861, and served for over four years.
A document commissioned by the US Senate, "List of Pensioners on the Roll, January 1, 1883" includes Abner on page 361, stating that was currently receiving a pension of $2 per month, and that the 'Cause for which penisioned' was 'g.s. w rt. cheek and hand' and that the pension started July 1882. This seems to indicate that he had suffered a gunshot wound to his right cheek and hand during the Civil War.
Abner married Sarah Tifft Henry on July 4, 1881 at Pemberville, Ohio.
Henry family notes relate that Abner was about 6'2" tall, with brown eyes and dark hair. He worked as a farmer. Notes also indicate that he had a brother named Frank, with with Emma, who lived in Kalkaska Mich around 1910 and 1920.
His death was listed in the October 12, 1905 edition of the Pemberville Leader newspaper. The notice states that for years he was 'a trusted engineer of the Dewey Stave company and later as an engineer at the electrical light station at Pemberville. He also worked in a sawmill.
He died on a Friday afternoon about three o'clock, with death occuring suddenly and unexpectedly, after what was thought to be a minor illness of a few days.
