"Born in Drothem parish in the Swedish city of Norrkoping on the Baltic Sea, August Franzen became noted for his formal society portraiture, but was also successful as an impressionist landscape painter. At the age of twelve, he began a three-year apprenticeship to Anders Gottman, a portrait and genre painter in Norrkoping. This study was followed by time in Stockholm, where he studied with Carl Julius Olsen and with Carl Larsen, a popular genre painter whom he later credited as being highly influential in his painting career."
