At the age of twelve, he began a three-year apprenticeship to Anders Gottman, a portrait and genre painter in Norrkoping. This study was followed by time in Stockholm, where he studied with Carl Julius Olsen and with Carl Larsen, a popular genre painter whom he later credited as being highly influential in his painting career."
