John Wesley, my grandfather, was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee in the last year of the Civil War. According to my father, George, a bullet from a Union soldier hit his crib and almost made John a casualty of that war.

Shortly after the war John's family moved to Laurel County, Kentucky where they stayed until they moved to Hancock County, Tennessee in the mid-1870s.

John married Eliza Barnard in Hancock County, Tennessee on January 3, 1888. By 1900 they had moved to Lone Mountain, Claiborne County, Tennessee. In that census his occupation is listed as farmer and Eliza listed that she had five children four of which were still living.

My Dad told me that John was also trained to a teacher. My Dad told me that they used a mule to plow and disk their land. He never told me how many acres they cultivated, probably enough to raise their own food. It must been pretty wild. He said that one time a panther got in the rafters of their house and screamed most of the night.
