Sarah McCown was the daughter of George McCown (1740-1820) and Margaret (Peggy) Kerr McCown (1747-1836). The McCown family emigrated from Ireland.

In about 1791, Sarah married William Cross. They moved to to Madison Co., Kentucky where two children were born. They separated there about 1794. Sarah took George and went to her parents in Tennessee. William took John and returned to Botetourt Co., Virginia. William returned to Madison Co., KY about 1807. He remained there until 1828 when he moved with all of his family to North Central Missouri, settling on a farm 4 miles North of Roanoke. Later, he moved to Howard Co., MO, living on the farm of his son, John about 1 mile east & 1/2 mile south of Armstrong.

Sarah married a Mr. Clark, but soon separated from him. In either Tennessee of Christian County, KY to which the McCown family had moved, she married Adam Moore by whom she had ten more children. Most or all of them were born in Christian Co. The McCown and Moore families moved to Illinois in about 1812, moved a couple of more times, then settled in Coles Co., IL. She died on Feb. 19, 1851, at age 77 years. Adam Moore returned to Christian Co., KY.

Sarah was described as a robust, red haired woman of very determined character.
