Richard James Whitney, Sr., age 78 of Bethel, died Monday, February 21, 2011 at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Ann (Checko) Whitney. He was born in Norwalk, May 27, 1932, son of the late James and Lena (Pooley) Whitney. Richard served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was a Bethel resident for 46 years. For 35 years, he worked at the U.S. Postal Service in Brookfield and was a member of American Legion Post 100 of Bethel. Richard was a kind, loving person and in addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Richard J. Whitney, Jr. and his fiancée, Carrie McManamon of Plymouth; his daughter, Leigh Whitney of Thomaston; grandson, Andrew Nedley; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends in the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, Thursday evening from 5 to 8. Private burial will be held at Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.
