Howard DeWitt Swainston, 84, died peacefully at his Eagle, Idaho home early Tuesday morning, February 22, 2011, surrounded by his loving family.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Howard, also known as De, was born December 10, 1926 in Whitney, Idaho to Howard "Slim" and Neva Parkinson Swainston. He was raised on the family farm. He developed his musical talent in piano and voice. Howard was also a high school basketball star pursuing a keen interest of his father.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific theatre, from 1944 through the end of the war.
He was a lifetime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission to Norway. Upon his return, he attended and graduated from the University of Utah with a law degree.
Howard married Joyce Elaine Cummings on June 8, 1953 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and they raised their children in Glendale, California. Howard had a rewarding career as a respected trial attorney in the firm Breidenbach, Swainston, Crispo & Way, retiring in 1995.
He was generous with his time and means and served diligently in his community and many church callings. He was an avid runner, talented musician and patron of the arts.
Howard and Joyce acquired a large art collection and welcomed many into their home to share their love of beauty and hospitality. With his wife, Howard retired to Eagle, Idaho in 2002 where he had time to spend serving a mission in the Boise, Idaho temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He also spent time reading, decorating, gardening, hosting events for family and friends and maintaining close relationships with his children and grandchildren. He found great joy in the time spent with his wife of 57 years and his family.
Howard is survived by his wife, Joyce; children, Kurt (Sydney) Swainston, Erika (Sydney) Soelberg, Colin (Pamela) Swainston and Paul (Rebecca) Swainston; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sisters, Joyce Perry and NevaAnn Swainston Geddes.
Services will be held at 12 noon, Monday, February 28, 2011 at the Eagle Idaho LDS Stake Center, 2090 N. Eagle Road in Eagle. A viewing will be held at the church from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, February 27th and from 10 to 11:45 a.m. Monday, at the church prior to the services.
Arrangements are being provided by the Zeyer Funeral Chapel, Nampa.
In lieu of flowers, Howard desired donations be made to a charity of the arts of your choice, or to the mission fund for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
