Those killed were left behind in the chaos of retreat to river boats. Burial at Belmont Landing was performed by Confederates however any markers were washed away by flooding of the Mississippi.

William P Austin, age 22 of Washington,Iowa nativity Ohio enlisted Aug 7 1861 into same company. Wounded slightly Nov 7 1861 at the Battle of Belmont. Discharged April 25 1862 at Pittsburg Landing after Battle of Shiloh(Apr 6 1862). Possibly a brother or close relative of Lewis.

William R Austin, age 23 of Wassonville,Iowa nativity Ohio enlisted Aug 7 1861 into same company. Wounded slightly at the Battle of Belmont Nov 7 1861. Discharged Apr 23 1862 at Pittsburg Landing after the Battle of Shiloh. Also possibly a brother or close relative of Lewis.

The 7th Iowa and 22nd Illinois comprised Dougherty's Brigade during the ill-advised Battle of Belmont,Missouri Nov 7 1861. The 7th suffered the most losses of any unit(killed,captured and wounded).

"On November 6, Grant sailed from Cairo, Illinois, to attack the Confederate fortress at Columbus, Kentucky. The next morning, he learned that Confederate troops had crossed the Mississippi River to Belmont, Missouri. He landed his men on the Missouri side and marched to Belmont. Grant's troops overran the Confederate camp and destroyed it. However, the scattered Confederate forces quickly reorganized and were reinforced from Columbus. They then counterattacked, supported by heavy artillery fire from across the river. Grant retreated to his riverboats and took his men to Paducah, Kentucky." Wikipedia
