While Newt was working as a bookkeeper at the Atlanta Clearing House processing bankchecks, he met Tracy. They were married about 1923. In the late 1920s, he worked as a salesman at various furniture stores in Atlanta. During the mid-1930s, Newt and Tracy lived in Barnwell, South Carolina, where they operated a furniture store. About 1940, they moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where Newt was a partner in the Lea & Putnam Furniture Store. In the mid-1960s, after Tracy's brother-in-law, Nick Burgess, died, Tracy and Newt moved to Nashville to live with her sister, Jessie DeRossett Burgess. Newt and Tracy had no children.
