According to the family, his middle name was "Breckenridge". Others suggest "Burrell/Burwell".
Supposedly, there was a "James Mills= Octavia Breckenridge?" union in Augusta Co, VA, circa 1769. THIS HAS YET TO BE PROVEN.

James Wiley Mills, a son, also buried at this Mills Cemetery, named a son Joseph Breckenridge Mills. More research needed.

William has a foot stone only marked "William B. Mills, CSA". He also has a CSA Veterans Cross. Served in 4th VA Heavy Artillery; 34th VA Infantry. Is said to have surrendered at Appomattox and walked home; died shortly thereafter (see new info below).....

Some give the name of the individual who shot Billy: "Buck Taylor"

Family Lore says he walked home and died after getting back to Franklin.
Although the War ended 9 Apr 1865 at Apptx, this new info, together with the Death Cert posted death date of "3 Apr 1865" contradicts the family story, but does seem to support the "Appomattox death" story.

His parentage has yet to be proven, pending YDNA analysis of a descendant "Mills" MALE.
