Vernon served in World War II. On his ETO Ribbon, he had three stars for the major battles of France, the Rhineland, and Central Germany. He fought in France and through the Siegfried Line into Germany with the Third and Seventh Armies. He was with the 12th Armored Division. He retired from the Department of Agriculture as a USDA food inspector. During his life, he had many interests including golf, snow skiing, water skiing, hunting, oil painting and especially flying (he had his pilot's license and later in life flew ultralights.) He was also an avid reader.
Born and raised in Quicksburg, VA, Vernon moved to Newport News to work in the shipyard. It was during this time he met his wife, Judith, and they made Tidewater their home for many years before returning to the Shenandoah Valley.
His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always a source of grand amusement and joy from taking Jonathan for a ride in his pickup truck to watching Isaiah sneaking candy into his pants pocket.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Grandle Funeral Home chapel in Broadway with Buzz Menhardt officiating. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Uzzells United Methodist Church Cemetery in Smithfield, VA.
The Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway assisted the family with the arrangements..
