Leonard G. Beck, age 77 of Champion, passed away on Sunday Oct. 1, 2006 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming Township, where he had resided since April of this year.

Leonard was born on April 23, 1929 in Detroit, the son of the late Gideon Beck and Edna (Andun) Beck. Leonard and his family moved to the Champion area in his infancy and he had resided in this area since that time, other than a few years in Wyoming where he worked as a diamond driller in the mines.

Leonard was a graduate of the Champion High School, Class of 1947, and attended Technical School for two years, studying surveying. Leonard married Carol Laitinen on March 11, 1950 in Negaunee. He worked construction mainly on phase two and phase three of the paper mill in Escanaba and also at the White Pine Copper Mine. Leonard went on to teach construction and surveying at the NMU skills center, retiring in the late 1980's following 16 years with the! university.

Leonard will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. Leonard was a member of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council for several years, the Champion Lions Club in which he was a member for over 50 years and had held several officer positions, and also was a member of the Ishpeming Elks Club for the past 17 years. Leonard enjoyed his camp, hunting, fishing, bowling and golfing.

Survivors included his wife Carol Beck of Champion; a daughter Diane (Lynn) Freng of Vancouver, WA; a grandson Cory Freng of Vancouver, WA; a brother Charles Beck of Baraga; along with two nephews Eric and Keith Beek. He was preceded in death by a son Kenneth Beck in 1998; a brother Kenneth Beck and an infant sister Trace Beck.
