John Gordon settled in Standing Stone about 1803. He was the son of James Gordon, who was one of the earliest settlers in Frenchtown and established a ferry there before the arrival of the French.
John married Mary, daughter of Henry Birney and lived near his father-in-law. He spent his days in clearing and improving his land and conducting a distillery.
