Mary Helen Russell, 90, entered into eternal peace Friday, February 18, 2011, at Senior Commons at Powder Mill. She was the wife of Robert E. Russell.

Mary Helen was born in Trucksville (Kingston), Pennsylvania, on December 9, 1920, the daughter of the late Jacob and Matilda (Schmidt) Beline.

Mary Helen graduated from College Misericordia where she was valedictorian of the class of 1942. Mary Helen began a career in teaching at Canton High School in Canton, shortly after graduation. In addition to Canton High School, Mary Helen taught at Sullivan County, Palmerton, Lehighton, Slatington and Pleasant Valley High Schools as well as St. Basil's elementary school during her career.

While teaching in Canton, Mary Helen met and married Robert E. Russell with whom she recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. After living in Canton for several years, Mary Helen and Bob moved to Dushore, where they lived until 1973. From 1973 to 2010, Mary Helen and Bob lived in Lehighton, until their recent relocation to York.

Mary Helen was a devout Catholic and set a strong, faith filled example for her family. She was a member of the Alter and Rosary Society as well as the Choir and served as a Religious Education teacher while a member of the St Basil's Parish in Dushore. She served as a Eucharistic Minister while a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Palmerton.

Mary Helen enjoyed traveling, and in addition to numerous driving trips within the continental United States, she and Bob made several trips to Hawaii, sailed on Caribbean Cruises and toured France, Belgium and Ireland. Mary Helen always enjoyed summer trips to the beach but especially when together with her sons, daughters in law and grandsons. After retiring from her teaching career, Mary Helen developed an interest in Astronomy and enjoyed stargazing both in her back yard and while traveling.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Russell is survived by three sons, Robert F. Russell and wife, Nancy of Downingtown; Michael G. Russell and wife, Susan of Dawsonville, Ga.; and Gerard J. Russell and wife, Cathy of York. She was also blessed with six grandsons, Robert J. and wife, Rose; Christopher; Neal and fiancé, Jen; Eric and wife, Lauren; Greg and Mark Russell. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Beline and Mildred Devlin and one brother, Frank Beline.

Burial will be in St. Basils Cemetery, Dushore.
