Death of George H. Backus

George H. Backus of Woodruff Rd., town of Lima, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 1958, after a long illness, during the last 11 months of which he had been confined to his bed. He was 86 years old. Mr. Backus was the son of Theodore and Gloanah Ganung Backus, and was born Oct. 23, 1872, in the cobblestone house on Poplar Hill Rd., now owned and occupied by the T. H. Williams family. As a boy he attended school both in South Livonia and in Livonia. He married Miss Linnie Bettis of Livonia, and they had a daughter, Mildred, the present Mrs. Walter Nufer of Miami, Fla. Mrs. Backus died in 1896. Three years later Mr. Backus married Miss Celia Ganung of Livonia. They lived in the village for three years, then moved to the farm on Woodruff Rd.. which had been their home for the last 56 years. Mr. Backus was a member of the old Livonia Baptist Church and subsequently of the present Congregational church. He served several years on the board of trustees. For many years he belonged to the Livonia Masonic Lodge. Surviving members of the family are the wife and daughter and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at Brown Funeral Home Tuesday, the Rev. Clifford Tobin, pastor of the Livonia Congregational Church, officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery. Livonia. Bearers were four nephews: Gordon York of Gates. Gerald York of Lockport. Robert King of Middleport and Ralph Lunn of Wellsville.
