The following obituary appeared on the front page of the Merrill Daily Herald, Merrill, Wisconsin, on January 19, 1948:
"Prominent Local Woman is Dead; Rites Wednesday
"Mrs. Nathalie Scribner Was Active for Quarter of a Century in City's Civic and Cultural Life
"Mrs. Nathalie H. Scribner, 55, a prominent figure in the civic and cultural life of this community for the past 25 years, during which time she served as librarian of the T. B. Scott Free Library of this city, died last night at 9:30 p.m. at the Holy Cross hospital. Mrs. Scribner, who resided at the Ellis Court Badger Hotel apartment, had been in ill health for 14 months and seriously ill for the past month.
"During the quarter of a century when Mrs. Scribner directed the work of the library, the circulation rose from approximately 25,000 to last year's figure of 102,355, of which 34,565 was rural.
"Mrs. Scribner was an honorary member of the Monday Club Study Class, Junior Study Class and Social Topic Club and vice-president of the Women's Alliance. She was active in the organization of the Junior clubs of the city. She was a member of the Wisconsin State Library Association and the American Library Association.
"She was active in club work and appeared before these and other organizations in all parts of the county many times, giving talks on books.
"Mrs. Scribner was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Library School and was head of the children's department at the Jacksonville, Illinois, library before coming to Merrill in 1922.
"She was a member of the Church of the Ascension in this city and belonged to St. Monica's Guild.
"Mrs. Scribner, the daughter of Marvin B. Hunnell and Belle (Armstrong) Hunnell, was born December 21, 1892 at Argyle, Wisconsin.
"She was married on April 23, 1920 to Frank G. Scribner, Duluth, Minnesota, who preceded her in death as did a sister, Mrs. Lenore M. Linceynen [Lindgren].
"Surviving are four cousins, Royal Tyler, Lake Mills, Wisconsin; Chester Close, Aberdeen, South Dakota; Roy Gierhart, Argyle; and Mrs. Arthur Jenkins, Hibbing, Minnesota.
"Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Taylor funeral home and at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Ascension. Rev. Father C. W. Brunner will officiate. The body will lie in state at the funeral home from tomorrow at noon until the hour of services. The remains will be placed in the Merrill cemetery vault until spring when they will be taken to Duluth for interment.
"The T. B. Scott Free Library will be closed all day Wednesday out of respect to Mrs. Scribner.
