Captain Zephaniah Anson Fowler states he has lived in Georgia since 25 Sept. 1820 was a Captain in the Confederate Volunteers, Colquitt's brigade in such military service, at the battle of Virginia came down with rheumatoid fever and chronic dysentery which grew worse until I became unable to perform any kind of manual labor and am now confined to house and bed unable to help myself and walk without any means of support. Zephaniah A. Fowler was born in Warren county, Ga., September 25, 1820, and departed this life in Butler, Ga., the 16th of November 1893, in his seventy-fourth year. His parents moved to Crawford county (then Houston county) in 1821, in which county he lived almost continuously until 1881. He joined the Primitive Baptist church at Mt. Paran, in said county, and was baptized by Elder Samuel B. Burnett, the first Sunday in June 1848. He was a useful citizen, and enjoyed the confidence of his neighbors and fellow citizens, and often filled positions of trust and honor, and represented his county in the Legislature of the State. He entered the Confederate army in May 1861, and served as captain of his company with credit to himself and country.
He died a beloved member of the church at Butler, and is greatly missed by the church. He was always in his seat, unless prevented by sickness, for his health was bad the last few years of his life. He was a firm and solid Christian, and always had the courage of his convictions, and was not afraid to express them. He leaves an almost helpless wife, who has not walked in over three years. He leaves several children, all of whom are good members of society; and also a beloved and affectionate brother in the flesh and in the church, Bro. J.B. Fowler, who was almost as much stricken by his brother's death as the dear old sister. She is a precious sister, and may the good Lord ever watch over and comfort her; and I believe he will; and may he save the children. He rests in Jesus, and we hope to meet again in a better world. At his home in Butler on the 16th inst., occurred the death of Capt. Z.A. Fowler, Brother of Capt. John B. Fowler. Primitive Baptist Born Warren County, Sept. 25, 1820 and therefore was a little more than 73 years old. Father of 9 children, five of whom still survive him. Leaves afflicted wife. Soldier in Confederate army. Capt. of the Crawford County gray's in 1862. Served in the 6th Ga. Regiment, Colquitt's Brigade. Represented Crawford County in the legislature. Citizen of Butler about 8 years. Interred in the Butler cemetery.
